Questions about domain lookup

What is WHOIS?

WHOIS is the public registration record every domain has -- who it's registered to (unless privacy-protected), when it was created, when it expires, and which nameservers it uses.

Will I see the owner's personal details?

Only if that domain has WHOIS privacy turned off. Most domains registered through us (and many elsewhere) have it on by default, showing privacy-service details instead.

Is a lookup the same as an availability check?

Not quite -- the Register page tells you instantly if a name is free to register. A lookup is for a name that's already registered, to see its details.
